A challenging site can push a design into a unique and exciting direction. In this case, a steep slope located next to a sculpture garden was the canvas to work upon. We opted to create a 3-story structure to minimize the footprint and excavation requirements, while elevating the main living area to a high perch with a beautiful view of Lake Whatcom, the Puget Sound, and the surrounding forest canopy. Simple primary forms and creative structural solutions define the overall architecture. The finished square footage is relatively compact, but aims to be right-sized; nothing excessive, nothing too cramped.
