A rare, fun, challenging, and rewarding project from start to finish. We were approached by a very unique couple who had a vision to transform the historic chapel in Bow, WA into a custom home. Challenges were present everywhere throughout the structure. Flood plain regulations meant that we had to pour an entirely new foundation and raise the building by nearly two feet. Sagging roof lines and bowed walls required creative solutions using exposed steel tension rods to pull the home back into true. We maintained the structure of the original church, and added a new wing to the south, separated by a shou-sugi-ban clad entry connection. Skylights penetrate this dividing mass, drawing a clear line between the old and new. Kenneth Brown Design worked closely with the owners to develop the bright and bold vision for the interior design resolution.
